Spring is here, and it’s time to clean those gutters
! Before you begin it’s good to make sure that you have all of the tools that you might need.
Having the right tools can make the difference between an unsafe, unhappy project where you get injured and an afternoon where you simply work hard to protect your home from rainwater damage. We’ve already talked about how to choose the right ladder for cleaning your gutters , but there are other tools you might want to consider, too.
Protective Eye Googles
You wouldn’t believe some of the things that come out of gutters sometimes! Animals and insects are the biggest concerns
, but sometimes debris can fly around as you scoop it up, too.
A Rake
Most people don’t stop and think about their roof when they begin their gutter cleaning job. Sometimes, however, the roof has a lot of debris on it, too. When it does you’ll need to rake it off before you clean the gutters.
The rake keeps you from having to do the job twice. Imagine getting your gutters nice and clean, only to have all the stuff on your roof fall back down into them during the very next rainstorm. Yuck.
A Spray Nozzle for Your Hose
If you’re using a standard garden hose to wash out your gutters then you’re going to want the spray nozzle for a little extra power.
As a safety concern, be sure that you’re always spraying towards the downspout. Work with the gutters. Don’t ever work against them.
A Gutter Scoop and Gutter Scoop Extension
Grabbing that stuff with your hands is no fun at all, even when you’re wearing gloves.
We recommend a plastic gutter scoop, since it does less damage to the gutters. The extension is helpful simply because it keeps you from having to constantly move your ladder, allowing you to reach further without endangering your safety.
A Good Sense of Humor
We’ve found all sorts of weird and crazy things in people’s gutters; sometimes they’re actually pretty funny!
Besides, cleaning gutters is a dirty task. Losing your temper isn’t very safe, and it just makes the job even less fun.
The Willingness To Call a Professional
Sometimes the best gutter cleaning tools are your good judgment and your phone.
For example, some gutter cleaning tasks are so intense that they require you to walk around on the roof to get them done. This is a time when it might just be a good idea to get someone to do the job for you.
Sure, there are special shoes you can buy to make walking around on your roof safer, and we don’t doubt that you’ve got the grit to get it done, but a professional gutter contractor also has a lot of extra safety equipment that they can use to prevent accidents.
