If your gutters don’t look this bad you’re probably in the clear.
Since we’ve gotten questions about dealing with these dents from time to time we thought we’d take a minute to discuss your options when this happens.
First, understand your seamless aluminum gutter system.
Remember that each side of a seamless aluminum gutter system consists of a single, unbroken piece. The only seams you’ll ever find are all at 90 degree turns–that is, at each corner of your house. This is true whether the piece is three feet long or 30 feet long.
Each piece is custom made, right on site, when the gutters are installed.
That means that you can’t just cut away a dented section of gutter and “splice in” some new gutter piece. Fortunately, you may not have to.
Try removing the dent yourself.
The truth is that most dents are not that severe. You can usually tap them out with a small hammer, or work them out with a pair of pliers.
And if the dent isn’t interfering with the functionality of the gutter or the aesthetic of your home, then you may even opt to leave it alone. The key question is whether or not the water is continuing to flow through that section of gutter without leaking or spilling over the edges.
Get help with severe damage.
The only time a gutter dent is cause for concern is when the gutter is collapsed or crushed to the point where it can no longer do its job. When that happens, the entire “run” of the gutter may well need to be replaced.
