As we discussed in our last post
, insects and rodents in your yard can help attract other animals to your gutters. Here are some natural, chemical-free ways to control pests in your yard.
Clean Outdoor Trashcans
Sometimes garbage slips out of garbage bags and into trashcans. Eventually the bottoms of trashcans become tempting food sources for bugs and rodents.
If your trash cans have started to smell, hose them out. You might want to do this periodically anyway, as a matter of habit.
Look for Standing Water
Insects love standing water. Mosquitoes, of course, are especially fond of it.
It’s not good for your landscaping either. So fill in the holes, create a drainage ditch, or build a rain garden to soak up water run-off.
Keep Decks and Fences in Good Repair
Rotting wooden decks or fences attract termites. Those are problems in their own right, so it pays to replace rotted wood as soon as you find it. It’s also a good idea to use a sealant to protect the wood.
Clean up After Pets
Insects feed off of feces, so if your pets use the yard as their bathroom it’s a good idea to just go ahead and scoop the poop. Besides, that will make your yard a nicer place to be, too.
Eliminate Hiding Places
Weeds, debris, and old lawn junk are attractive hiding places for rodents. Good yard maintenance isn’t just a matter of aesthetics.
These tips and measures are good for more than your gutters. Insects and rodents carry disease, so it’s a good idea to discourage them in principle.
This is especially true here in Central Florida, where our typical wet, warm conditions provide insects in particular with their ideal conditions. There’s nothing quite so unpleasant as walking up your driveway to be swarmed by mosquitoes, even if you don’t spend much time out in your yard.
