Today we’ll continue to talk about how to get ready for a hurricane, since 2013 is looking like it’s going to be intense. We’ve talked about your
hurricane grocery list
and we’ve talked about preparing
gutters, gutter guards, and downspouts.
Now, we’ll take a moment to talk about swimming pool preparation.
First, start by removing all the furniture, toys, and accessories that are in and around the pool. Store those items in a safe place.
Next, avoid damage to your pool by pruning any nearby trees or shrubs. If you haven’t done this anywhere else in your yard, now is a good time to do so.
Next, you’re going to cut the power to your pool equipment. Just flip the circuit breaker that corresponds to your pool.
Then, be sure to remove the pool pump, storing it somewhere safe and dry.
Reduce the water level in your pool by 1-2 feet, but don’t drain it.
Don’t worry. Your pool is not going to flood your property so long as the pool’s overflows are working correctly.
Believe it or not, the water that you leave in your pool will actually protect your pool from damage.
Once the storm has passed, you’ll have some work to do. Debris will create the most pressing issue, but again, don’t drain your pool. Just scoop it all out of there.
Then, treat the water. Balance the pH. Superchlorinate. And then run your filter. Remember to wait a day or so for the pool to become safe again.
