Rain Garden Design? There’s an App for That!

rain-garden-design-appIf you have an Apple iPhone and you want to engage in a little rain garden design before you put together your rain garden, then you’re in luck. You can take advantage of a free app called, appropriately enough, “ Rain Garden.”

This app will help you plan out just about every facet of your rain garden, including:

  • The size and placement of your garden.
  • Selecting plants for your garden.
  • Digging your garden.
  • Garden soil types.
  • Garden maintenance.
  • Drainage.

There doesn’t appear to be a similar app for the Android yet, but Android users might not have to wait too long. The app’s website says that the Android version is supposed to come out sometime this year.

If you’re still having trouble picturing a rain garden and how it works, here’s a short video. This rain garden incorporates a gutter-based rainwater harvesting system (as most do in some form or fashion).

April is actually water conservation month, so this is a great time to think about starting your first rain garden. Florida may be a coastal state, but we have growing water problems. Some of those water problems also contribute to the sinkhole problem which so recently made the news.

Planting Pinellas has offered even more rain garden resources to encourage the residents of Pinellas County to plant their own rain gardens. We thought that might be interesting to our customers and friends in Largo, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg.
