The Pinellas County Extension nearly always has something cool going on, and they’re running quite a few events during the next several weeks. Check out these classes and symposiums.
Shade Loving Plants
This event is coming up on August 28th. You’ll get a chance to hear from Master Gardener Pam Brown.
Sometimes, our Florida heat can kill full sun plants. If you don’t want your plants to wither than taking advantage of cool, shady spots in your yard may be the answer. To do this, you of course need plants that thrive in shady conditions.
This event starts at 2 p.m. and lasts just 1 hour. You can register here.
Citizen Scientist Workshop
If you are interested in volunteering to collect local ecological information then this is the class for you.
How would you help as a citizen scientist? Andrew Yuan, a Pinellas County Extension 4-H Youth Mentor, describes the process in Timely Topics.
He way it works is a group of scientists or even just one scientist creates a simple set of instructions for data collection and then distributes it to the public. Once the “citizen scientists” have finished their job, the scientists in charge compile all the data. For example, one of the most popular citizen science projects and the longest running project is the Christmas Bird Count.
The annual event hosted by the Audubon Society since 1900 has groups of volunteer bird watches identify and count all of the birds observed in a single day within the period of December 14th to January 5th. The data is compiled by the leader of the group and submitted to the Audubon Society, which uses the information to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America.
The greatest thing about citizen science is the work is easy enough for anyone to do, even small children.
This training is on September 7th, starting at 9:00 at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center. Register here.
2013 Energy Symposium
Finally, there’s the 2013 Energy Symposium. You’ll get to learn plenty of tips and tricks for making your home more water-and-energy wise.
The FREE 3 hour symposium will feature a keynote address by Dr. Jennifer Languell, award-winning green engineer with 15 years experience.
…From irrigation to PV panels, appliances to native plants, you’ll get information first-hand from Duke Energy, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods, Tampa Bay Water and much more!
Each registered participant will receive an insulated tote bag with manual powered LED flashlights, solar calculator, and educational information from UF/IFAS and our partners. Participants will also be elligible for door prizes–energy totes valued at $150 and rain barrels valued at $35.”
