We’ve been doing a lot of talking about how to handle mosquitoes
lately. A little additional research clued me in to some helpful plants that you can add to your garden for the purposes of keeping mosquitoes away.
Plan enough of these for your garden and you might just avoid mosquito problems altogether. They might just choose some other yard, one with friendlier environs.
1. Citronella
You’ve heard of citronella candles, but what about citronella grass? The grass has a smell that’s stronger than the candles and torches do, and is thus quite effective at getting rid of mosquitoes.
Citronella grass is also a pretty perennial plant. It grows in clumps of 5 to 6 inches and is easy to care for.
2. Catnip
Sure, you might entice a neighborhood stray to come and play in your yard. But Science Daily says that catnip is more effective than DEET , which is the active ingredient in OFF! and many other commercial insect repellents.
3. Marigold
Marigold is a powerful deterrent to all kinds of insects and mosquitoes. They work well in containers which means you can place them in trouble spots throughout your yard.
4. Lavender
Lavender’s scent is lovely to human noses, but mosquitoes hate it. It offers a gorgeous burst of color to just about any yard, too.
5. Peppermint
If you love the thought of having fresh mint for your tea then you now have an added excuse to add a bed of mint to your yard. The plant is offensive to mosquitoes! You can also crush up the leaves and rub it on your skin to create a natural, personal repellent that actually smells good to your own nostrils, too.
Mosquitoes are a fact of life in Florida, but they don’t have to ruin your enjoyment of your yard.
